BACKGROUND: Classically activated macrophages produce IL-12, IL-23, and TNF-α,
whereas alternatively activated macrophages (M2 cells) produce IL-10 and express several
receptors such as mannose receptor and CD163. Tumor-associated macrophages exhibit
M2 phenotype, whose presence has been associated with poor prognosis in various tumors.
